Islam is not a religion of empty forms. Every command of Allah carries wisdom, mercy and purification. When Allah commands fasting, He is not only asking the believer to leave food and drink for a number of hours. He is training the heart to choose obedience over desire. When Allah commands Zakāh, He is not only asking for a financial payment. He is cleansing the heart from greed and reminding the wealthy that the poor have a right. When Allah commands Ḥajj, He is not only asking for travel. He is calling the servant to leave comfort, status and routine in order to stand with humility before Him. These three acts of worship touch different parts of life. Fasting touches the body and hidden desire. Zakāh touches money and social responsibility. Ḥajj touches movement, time, wealth, patience and surrender. Together they teach the Muslim that every part of life belongs to Allah. The stomach belongs to Allah. The wealth belongs to Allah. The journey belongs to Allah. The heart belongs to Allah. Many Muslims know that fasting, Zakāh and Ḥajj are obligations, but they may not always feel how deeply these acts are meant to transform them. A person may fast and remain angry. A person may give Zakāh and remain proud. A person may perform Ḥajj and return with the same habits. This book is written to help the reader look beneath the surface and ask: What is Allah teaching me through this worship?
