Al-Buruj

Themes and purpose:

This Makkan surah is dedicated to strengthening the early believers against persecution. It achieves this by presenting the historical precedent of the People of the Ditch to warn the polytheists of their fate. The surah affirms Allah’s power, promises victory and eternal reward to the patient, and confirms that the Quran is the preserved, truthful revelation.

Context of Revelation:

Era: Makkan by consensus.

Context: The surah was revealed during a period when the polytheists of Makkah were severely persecuting the new Muslims. The text uses the story of the People of the Ditch who burned believers alive, as an analogous warning that the Quraysh would face similar divine judgment if they did not cease their persecution.

Chronology: It is counted the 27th surah in the order of revelation, revealed after Sūrat al-Shams and before al-Tīn.

Name and Ayah Count:

Name: The surah is known as "Sūrat al-Burūj" (The Zodiacal Signs) and "Sūrat al-Samā’ dhāt al-burūj" (The Heaven Possessing the Zodiacal Signs).

Virtue: The Prophet (ﷺ) customarily recited this surah in the Isha prayer together with Sūrat al-Ṭāriq.

Ayah Count: 22 ayahs by consensus.
